18th June, 2010 -
Level 1 Umpiring Course - General Principles
Netball Australia has received feedback that the Introductory Officiating General Principles online course is too complex and demanding for young participants which make up a large percentage of participants in this course. Netball Australia advises that the Introductory Officiating General Principles online course is no longer a requirement for the Level 1 Umpire Course. Those participants that have already completed the Level 1 course but not the online course may be awarded with the course. Future participants are not required to complete the online course nor purchase the ASC manual. The National Umpire Strategic Committee will review whether the online course should be included in the accreditation framework when they meet later this year. This decision now means that any participants to Level 1 courses that have been conducted since 2008 and who had not completed the General Principals component, will now have their attendance recorded and their accreditation recognised. For further information or questions, please contact the PRNA Secretary.

So lets all get on board throughout the month of June and support a fantastic cause and let’s all go Beyondblue.

15th March, 2010 - PRNA Announces new SMS Information Service
PRNA have implemented a new SMS information service, whether it be the status of Rep Training or whether rounds are still on due to weather, you can simply receive an update via your mobile phone. This service runs in addition to notices published on the webiste or an answering machine message left on the phone at the PRNA clubhouse.
To receive updates you simply need to text PRNA 199 22 767 or text PRNA 199BBSMS to receive an automated response message to your mobile phone. *Conditions do apply refer below.
For Rep training we recommend that you check it around 3pm - 4pm on a Monday, and for Winter Day rounds, check 1 hour prior to the round commencing on the Saturday.
Cost: There is a 55c charge to ANYONE that sends an SMS to 199 22767. This is charged to the users mobile account by their network provider, eg. Telstra, Optus, Vodafone.
Is this a subscription service? No. There is no need for players, coaches, managers, umpires or parents to register or join in order to use the service.
What if my phone returns a message like "premium service barred"? 199 22767 is a Premium SMS number, just like the numbers you can SMS to vote and enter competitions on the radio and TV shows such as Big Brother. So your mobile phone plan must be able to send Premium SMSs to use this service. If you cannot send Premium SMS's it might be because you have Premium SMS barring on your plan. To use this service you must contact your network provider (Telstra, Optus, Vodafone, etc) and ask this to be removed. This is a simple process that you need to undertake only once before you can access and use BounceBackSMS.
Vodafone Customers Only.
Premium SMSs are NOT included in Vodafone's Prepaid Maxi and Super Caps. So, if you are on a Vodafone Prepaid Maxi/Super Cap, you cannot use this service at this time. You can however use the service if you switch to a Vodafone post-paid Maxi/Super cap plan or switch the the Pre Paid Texter or NightTalker. For more information about switching plans please visit www.vodafone.com.au

Updated 11th February, 2010 - PRNA Announces Change of Netball QLD Region
It is with great pleasure that Pine Rivers Netball Association announces our successful entry into the North Brisbane Netball Region!
Geographically, this is fantastic news for all players who live in the surrounding North Brisbane Region. Pine Rivers Netball Association shares this Region with Bradbury Park Netball Association, Downey Park Netball Association, Redcliffe Netball Association and Queensland Catholic Netball Association.
Coaching opportunities and developmental pathways will also be of great benefit to us at Pine Rivers. All members are encouraged and welcomed in becoming more involved with the development of players and coaches in the pathways to further development. In our region we have the very successful Cougars Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams coached by Liz White and Amanda Vander Wahl. Both Cougars Tier teams made it through th Final Series in 2009, with Tier 1 being knocked out in the Semi's and Tier 2 coming runners up in the Grand Final.
The opportunity Pine Rivers has to promote and support our regions Cougars Teams can only further develop and strengthen netball as a sport. We will also be utilising the professional skills of Liz and Amanda who are both High Performance Coaches, with many years of experience. Both ladies experience in coaching at the highest level in the sport of netball, will also strengthen Pine rivers and continue to grow strength in our Region.
North Brisbane also will be selecting Regional Academy Squads / Teams in early March. The academy team will be selected to train over the course of the year by very experienced coaches to help develop athletes further with drills and skills. This academy team will then compete against all other regions in Queensland to determine a Queensland 17’s Squad. Training for the academy is usually 10 training session for 2 hours at a time. The training venue is usually Boondal Sports complex. Keep your eyes on our website. Further details in regards to North Brisbane Academy squads / teams are coming soon in early March.

Congratulations is extended to Tegan Collins, Taylor Faulks, Caitlin Pelgrave & Jessica Willis, who were today presented with the Australian Government's National Sports Leaders Award at a special presentation held at Parliament House, Brisbane. The QLD Minister of Sport (Mr Phil Reevers) and MP Member of Pine Rivers (Mrs Carolyn Male) presented the certificates to the girls, recognising their outstanding achievements in the Challenge, Achievement & Pathways in Sport (CAPS), program implemented by PRNA across the Winter Fixture season. Many people would have seen these young ladies working tirelessly each Saturday and at Carnivals, either at the Club House or out on the Courts. Based on the number of hours that they have completed and the range of working fields that these girls participated in (Umpiring, Coaching, Administration, Hospitality & Customer Service), the Australian Government has awarded these fantastic young ladies with the highest achievement award - the National Sports Leadership Award! Well done and Congratulations to not only the girls but to also to the likes of Jenny Collins, Linda Lee-Grant and others on the PRNA Executive that made this happen.

Talent Identification Program: 2010 Rep Netball
PRNA are currently conducting a Talent Identification program (TIP) that will see players with potential identified and invited to participate in our 2010 Representative Netball team selection program. Over the past 4 Saturdays members of our Coaching Sub-Committee have been out viewing players who have been recommended by either their team coach or club. This process will occur again this Saturday, our final Winter Fixture round. Those players who demonstrate good netball abilities will then receive an invitation to participate in PRNA's October Holiday Rep Netball Development clinic. Following this those players who demonstrate high potential, and an interest, will be eligible to participate in PRNA's 10 week Junior Training program. It is from this TIP that our 2010 Rep Squads will be selected prior to the Christmas break. Final teams will then be selected early in 2010 for next year's Representative season. If you are interested to be considered, or require further information please contact our Executive Member Elaine Anders - 0412 412 301.

Challenge, Achievement & Pathways in Sport Program!
The PRNA Executive are pleased to advise that they will commence the government's Challenge, Achievement & Pathways in Sport (CAPS) scheme at PRNA as a means of developing and supporting our future Leaders. In addition, this scheme will be linked to the Executive's 'Future Fit' work scheme that will see six young leaders joining PRNA's operational team as they learn the roles that are required to run the Association, while earning a small wage for their services. This additional project has been initiated by PRNA as a means of developing future Committee members who in time will play an active role in running the Association, while providing an opportunity for our youth to remain involved in their Saturday sport instead of having to be at their part-time job to earn an income.
CAPS is a leadership program that allows participants aged 14 - 20 years to gain experience across a range of core operational areas including Coaching, Administration, Umpiring, Sports Health and Event Management. The young CAPS participants will work with our Coordinator gaining skills and completing on-th-job training while their hours of service are credited towards achievement of a CAPS Step Award. PRNA welcome enquiries from Clubs as to how they may also implement the CAPS scheme at a local level to not only encourage involvement by their senior members back into the daily operations of their club but as a means of recognising the valuable role our youth play. Please contact PRNA's Secretary for further details.
'Future Fit' work scheme is a trial project being implemented by PRNA that will identify up to six young CAPS participants to be directly involved in the running of weekly Saturday Fixtures, PRNA's Club Carnival, Awards night and Summer Fixtures. This work will be undertaken just as any part-time job role would be also building 'work-ready' skills. Applications are open and close on July 3rd. For further details and an application form please click here or contact PRNA's Secretary.

Umpiring Training steps forward at Pine
PRNA's Umpiring Officer, Lyn Downes, and her trainers were overwhelmed with participation numbers seen at the Umpiring training program that started on Saturday - 64 keen and enthusiastic people from as young as 12 yrs to let's say the more mature! This was an outstanding response and will ensure that PRNA's fixtures can continue to grow. The training program involves 5 weeks of Rules workshop sessions followed by team umpiring throughout the rest of the season until the new Umpires gain the required competencies. Representatives can then sit for their National badges as they progress through the training program. Sincere thanks to all clubs for promoting the training program and we look forward to seeing many new faces out umpiring later in the season. Thanks to Lyn and her training team for all the work, support and assistance they will provide to the new recruits over the coming months!

Umpires Training Commencing!
Umpires play an important role in the world of Netball and at times an extremely challenging one....... however, the role can also be very enjoyable with lots of event opportunities available to those who join the umpiring team. Congratulations to Caitlin Pelgrave and Kira Niesler who were selected for their umpiring skills to support the recent Primary Schoolgirls competition run by Education Queensland and sanctioned by Netball Queensland - a great achievement.
This Saturday will see the start of PRNA's next Umpiring Training program. Clubs are encouraged to ensure they have as many participants as possible enrolled. It is only through ongoing education & training can we ensure that the on-court competitions remain fair for all. The course starts Saturday 30th May at 9am and all levels of abilities & interests are welcomed. We are also keen to have more adults involved in umpiring to support the many club teams now involved each Saturday. The training program involves 5 workshop sessions and then on-court training with a mentor until you are ready for an independent role. There are accreditation badges as your skills and competencies improve to be achieved. For further details please contact Ron Yardly byardley2@bigpond.com

Round 2 - Netball Queensland State League
Congratulations to our 16 yrs CSC team, coached by Julie Bowman and Manager Paula Kenny, who recorded another win at last nights clash against Western Districts. The girls went out strong from the start and lead the entire game with Western Districts only coming back and closing the lead to within two (2) points in the final quarter. However, the consistency and determination of Pine's girls pull the team ahead to end with a four (4) point win.
Unfortunately, our 19 yrs CSC team faced another tough battle this week against the strong and determined Southern Districts team, going down by only 3 points at full time. The Pine girls put in another solid game and brought the game back in the 3rd quarter to a small lead but couldn't hold this lead throughout the 4th quarter.
Next week our 19 yrs face Downey Park while our 16 years will battle it out with Shailer Park. We wish both teams well and also all the best to the girls who are heading to Roma for the Queensland School Girls State Championships!

Mixed competition kicks off at Pine!
Tonight saw the re-introduction of a Men's and Mixed competition back at Pine Rivers Netball. While participation numbers weren't high the fun, fast paced action and laughs certainly were. The 'Four Kings' went down to a combined team dubbed 'The Mighty Blues'! It was great to see a mix of ages and again the men demonstrating that Netball is no longer just for the 'girls'...... although the balanced shooting stance of our President did bring smiles to many of his young charges faces. Excellent on-court battle, heaps of laughs and plenty of fitness building fun was had by all.
We look forward to welcoming more teams next Thursday night! If you don't have a team but would love to play also just head down to the courts by 7pm for a 7:30pm start. All ages and abilities welcomed.
Pine Rep Team Members train with Lynx!
Tegan Collins (16/1 Rep Team) and Elke Futcher (15/1 Rep Team) had the privilege of training alongside the Suncoast Lynx as members of Netball Queensland's Suncoast Junior Academy squad last night. A specialised fitness and skill session followed with a game against the Tier 2 Lynx team was enjoyed by both girls. It was great to see our own Ashleigh Crouch, Lynx Tier 2 team member, also in action. The first Lynx game will be held at the Suncoast Uni on May 23rd.

Pine Rivers Netball launches new Uniform!
Pine Rivers Netball Association's Representative teams will take the court for the 2009 competitive season in a new uniform, that was the 'talk of the courts' when launched at the recent Netball Queensland 16 Years State League Grading day! The playing dress and bike pants will keep Pine's traditional green and gold colours along with our current design however we changed from a bodysuit to dress to ensure Pine players look professional while being comfortable in the latest Netball uniform fashion items. We thank the team at Game Sports Clothing for the great design that has allowed us to keep the PRNA look out on the court in a fantastic way..... although it seems the bike pants have taken the lead in respect to being the most wanted item!

Firebirds visit PRNA!
The PRNA courts were alive on Sunday as over 120 young players enjoyed a three (3) hour clinic run by Queensland's Firebirds. Thanks go to Netball Queensland and the Firebirds for such an exciting day. The clinic was one of the largest held to-date and was the first time the Firebirds have visited the Pine Association. Following 3 hours of Netball skills, drills and games players received another treat as the five (5) Firebirds stayed to sign an item for each and every player! A fantastic day was had by all...... and we wish the Firebirds all the best in the coming competitive season and look forward to another clinic being held at our courts later in the year.
PRNA Coaches achieve success!
Congratulations to the following coaches who performed credibility on Sunday (15th March) at Netball Queensland's Intermediate Coaching Course. This was the final part of their training program and involved not only informative lectures, practical workshops but also an intense practical assessment task. All coaches did extremely well and have successfully achieved their Intermediate Coaching Accreditation. This ensures that PRNA now has one of the largest number of not only Accredited Foundation Coaches but also representatives accredited as Intermediate Coaches. We once again wish to acknowledge the vital funding that was provided by the Queensland Government's Community Benefit fund. This has allowed PRNA to cover the cost of all training programs to assist more representatives to complete and gain their coaching accreditations, which will benefit all players at Pine.

In loving memory - Roslyn McKechnie
It is with a sad heart that we advise the Pine Netball Community on the passing of Roslyn McKechnie. Roslyn was the founding President of the Pine Rivers Netball Association and gave enormously of her time and worked hard for many years to develop and grow Netball within the Pine District. After fighting strongly Ros lost the battle to her illness on Sunday evening, 4th January 2009. Our deepest of condolences and best wishes go to Catherine and all the McKechnie family for their loss - our hearts are with you all at this sad time.
A little history
Ros McKechnie (a member of ACE netball) was very instrumental in driving the formation of the Pine Rivers Netball Association along with members of Pinecones, Scorpions and Pine Bears Netball clubs. She was elected as the inaugural President in 1981 however, as with many voluntary committees, Ros was also a coach, umpire and groundsperson! The Netball courts were first located on the old Pine Dump area (the area now occupied by the football fields) and Roslyn along with others spent many backbreaking hours spreading ashes from the paper mill to level the ground for court use. She would always remember how many clubs originally started with white netball shoes, as part of their official uniform and how they quickly changed to black to match the ashes! Ros would be seen at the courts prior to the weekly fixtures doing the line marking that was required each week. It didn't take much rain for games to be postponed as the area quickly became a quagmire. One incident that Lana Midson, also a founding member and friend of Ros, recalls was at the official opening of the Association's first netball season. Mr Les Hughes (Chairman of the Council at the time and who the sporting grounds are named after) to pronounce the "Dump" open..... the slip of tongue was never forgotten without a smile from all involved. Roslyn remained President of the Pine Rivers Association until 1986 however, continue her involvement and support for Pine for many years directly and then through her own family, particularly daughter Catherine who has been a player and in recent years also stepped into the role of President of the Association along with being a member of Pine's important Representative Coaching team. Many lives have been touched by Roslyn McKechnie!

PRNA Players enjoy Netball Clinic
A number of PRNA Players headed to the Sunshine Coast on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th December to be involved in Netball clinics staged by Pattie Farrell (Elite player & previous Qld & Firebirds Coach). The Coaching staff for the clinics included Australian champions Liz Ellis & Catherine Cox! With this line up of coaches PRNA's players gained enormously while also having a great time learning new techniques and putting their current strengths to the test. Friday's 2 hour clinic involved representative level players targeting specialist areas of Defence, Shooting and Centre court work, and involved over 60 players. PRNA was represented by 4 of our 14-15 years rep team members. Under the direction of the clinic staff girls were put through their paces and enjoyed focused skill work on defence skills, shooting tips and circle work while the centre court game plays kept our representatives on the move. Saturday's clinic was an open clinic and again PRNA was well represented. The 2 hour session focused on ball and foot work and stretched all players in respect to their current skills. Under the direction of Liz and Catherine the girls enjoyed a range of games, drills and activities.
Liz Ellis was an Australian team member between 1992 - 2007 and captain the last 4 years. She has won Netball Australia's most valued player award four times and while residing in Sydney, playing for the Sydney Swifts from 2000 - 2007, she was born in Queensland! Catherine Cox first played at National level in 1994 as a member of the U21 Australian team and debut in the senior Australia team in 1997. Catherine has played with the Perth Orioles and then the Sydney Swifts from 2002, who achieved 5 straight grand finals.... winning 3! Catherine has also won several player of the match or series awards. The experience, skills and expertise of these two ladies is incredible and our players gained enormously from these excellent player development clinics. Thanks to our Coaching Officer, Lorraine Martin, for ensuring PRNA players have access to such opportunities!
 |
PRNA representative players, Tegan & Elke (along with Sarah (front) who previously played at Pine) enjoyed the Specialist Clinic targeting representative level players for the areas of Shooting, Defence and Centre court.
Jordanne Aitken & Rhiannon Cassidy also attended, not pictured. |
